How the Global Phone Price Calculator works

The Global Phone Price Calculator takes the phone's launch price in USD and multiplies it by a market factor that accounts for typical local taxes, VAT/GST, import duties and retail margins. The result is converted to local currency using the reference mid-market exchange rate for each country.

This gives you a like-for-like comparison across markets. The same iPhone 17 Pro Max might cost ₹1,49,900 in India but only ₹1,21,000 in Dubai — a difference of nearly ₹29,000, largely because of the tax gap (India's 18% GST vs Dubai's 5% VAT).

Why phone prices vary so much

The three main drivers are: taxes (UAE 5%, India 18% GST, Singapore 9%, UK 20% VAT), import duties (some countries charge extra tariffs on foreign-made phones), and retail competition (USA and UAE have highly competitive retail environments that push prices down).

For budget phones under ₹15,000, the pattern often reverses — India is cheapest because local manufacturing (Make in India) lowers the cost. For flagships over ₹50,000, the USA, Dubai and Hong Kong are almost always cheapest.

What is "landed cost" and why it matters

Landed cost is the true total cost of buying a phone abroad. It adds estimated shipping, customs/import duty and foreign-exchange fees to the sticker price. Our calculator lets you add these as percentages.

Example: An iPhone 17 Pro Max in Dubai at AED 5,299 converts to roughly ₹1,21,000. Adding 10% customs + 2% FX fee gives a landed cost of about ₹1,35,500 — still ₹14,400 cheaper than India's ₹1,49,900. The calculator lets you adjust all these figures.

When to wait vs when to buy now

If a phone just launched, prices usually drop 10-15% within 3-6 months. During major sales (Flipkart Big Billion Days in October, White Friday in November) prices drop a further 15-25% plus bank discounts.

If a phone has already dropped 20%+ from its launch price, the value is usually there. Use our price drop calculator to confirm the drop before you buy.

How we calculate prices

Each market price is based on the phone's US MSRP, multiplied by a market-specific factor reflecting typical taxes and retail margins, then converted at a reference mid-market exchange rate (mid-2026). We do not scrape live listings. See our methodology for details.
